The Kidney Meridian

The Yin Guiding Path of the Water Element

The kidney meridian together with the Bladder meridian the Water element. This is associated with winter, the color dark blue or black, the salty taste and the advanced age of man.

It is the time when nature and energy has completely retreated inside for regeneration. The kidneys are also the seat and storage place of life energy, called Qi. A strong kidney energy gives strength, vitality and willpower.

Portrait of Wolfgang Stemer for my TCM Qi Gong Academy, Simply Live Better

Wolfgang's Pro Tip

Combine the two movement systems Meridian Yoga and Qi Gong and increase their effect. In the morning, when the body is still a bit stiff, you can start the day with 15 minutes of Qi Gong and get the energy you need. In the evening, you can let go of the day with 15 minutes of meridian yoga and regain your composure.

Qi Gong for balance of kidney energy

Another very elegant and effective way to increase your personal energy comes from TCM. Qi Gong is a millennia-old art of movement, which is one of the 5 pillars of the Chinese medicine forms. The exercises are easy to learn and here I show you my 2 favorite exercises for balancing kidney energy.

The kidney meridian begins on the sole of the foot with the point Ki 01which is located between the big and small ball of the foot.

From there it runs along the sole of the foot to the inner arch and then on to the inner ankle to the acupuncture point Ki 03. This is located between the Achilles tendon and the inner ankle.

The renal meridian then loops downward to the acupuncture point Ki 06 and from there following the inner side of the lower leg, via the acupuncture point Sp 06 (Gathering of the three yin: MP, Le and Ni), upward to the back of the knee.

The acupuncture point Ni 10 is located here on the inner side between 2 tendons.

Continue up the back of the thigh to the fold of the buttocks.

Here the Kidney meridian disappears into the depths where it circles the genitals, then comes to the surface at the front of the body just above the pubic bone, 0.5 cun outside the midline.

Now, following the center line, it continues to pull upward on the acupuncture point Ki 16which lies to the side of the navel.

Arriving at the lower costal arch, it runs slightly obliquely outward, so that it now runs 2 cun outside the midline upward to the inner end of the clavicle. Here it is located just below the spherical end of the clavicle, ending at Ni 27.
