The Lung Meridian

The Yin Guiding Path of the Metal Element

The lung meridian together with the Colon meridian the Metal element. This is associated with autumn, the time of retreat. The energy begins to draw inward. The metal element creates order and structure.

The lungs are responsible for the absorption of vital oxygen and respiratory qi, and the large intestine releases everything old, no longer usable from the body. Thus, these two pathways form a functional unit.

Portrait of Wolfgang Stemer for my TCM Qi Gong Academy, Simply Live Better

Wolfgang's Pro Tip

Combine the two movement systems Meridian Yoga and Qi Gong and increase their effect. In the morning, when the body is still a bit stiff, you can start the day with 15 minutes of Qi Gong and get the energy you need. In the evening, you can let go of the day with 15 minutes of meridian yoga and regain your composure.

Qi Gong for balance of lungs energy

Another very elegant and effective way to increase your personal energy comes from TCM. Qi Gong is a millennia-old art of movement, which is one of the 5 pillars of the Chinese medicine forms. The exercises are easy to learn and here I show you my 2 favorite exercises for balancing lung energy.

Wolfgang doing the Qi Gong exercise Reach to the bottom of the sea (5 Elements Qi Gong)

Qi Gong Exercise

Reach to the bottom of the sea

The exercise "Reaching to the bottom of the sea" is a classical Qi Gong exercise to strengthen the energies of the lung (metal) and kidney (water). In TCM, it is believed that the lung absorbs the energy when inhaling and the kidney stores it when exhaling.

The exercise "Supporting the sky" strengthens the meridians of the lungs and large intestine. In the exercise, both arms are stretched upwards with the palms facing the sky. In addition, there is a rotation around the body axis in this movement.

The lung meridian begins in the first intercostal space below the collarbone. Here lies the acupuncture point Lu 01 6 cun outside the center line.

The meridian now runs upward to the clavicle and below it further to the shoulder and thus in the direction of the upper arm. Here it follows the outer side of the biceps to the crook of the elbow, where acupuncture point Lu 05 is also located on the outer side.

From Lu 05 it continues along the brachioradialis muscle (forearm muscle) until just before the wrist. Here the meridian briefly leaves its straight course and continues to Lu 07which is located above the styloid process (styloid process radii).

In the area of the wrist is the acupuncture point Lu 09 a very distinctive place. This is where the pulse is classically palpated.

It is located at the wrist furrow on the thumb side in a depression at which the pulse is palpable.

From here the meridian runs along the ball of the thumb to the thumb and ends at the radial nail fold angle with Lu 11.
