The Small Intestine Meridian

The Yang Pathway of the Fire Element

The small intestine meridian together with the Heart meridian the primary Fire element. The secondary fire element is formed by the two meridians cardiovascular and triple burner. The fire element corresponds to summer and heat.

The small intestine meridian has the special function of using the usable portion of the food and sending it to the cells via the blood. The non-usable parts are transported to the large intestine for excretion.

Wolfgang's Pro Tip

Combine the two movement systems Meridian Yoga and Qi Gong and increase their effect. In the morning, when the body is still a bit stiff, you can start the day with 15 minutes of Qi Gong and get the energy you need. In the evening, you can let go of the day with 15 minutes of meridian yoga and regain your composure.

Qi Gong for balance of small intestine energy

Another very elegant and effective way to increase your personal energy comes from TCM. Qi Gong is a millennia-old art of movement, which is one of the 5 pillars of the Chinese medicine forms. The exercises are easy to learn and here I show you my favorite exercise to balance the small intestine energy.

With the exercise "Carrying a pole" you balance your fire element and with it a total of 4 meridians - heart, pericardium, small intestine and triple burner. Through the meditative and slow execution of the movement, your mind (=Shen) calms down.

The small intestine meridian begins on the little finger at the outer nail fold angle and runs from there along the edge of the hand to SI 03which is located at the base joint of the little finger.

Now go over the outside of the forearm in a straight line to SI 08which is located on the outside of the elbow between the olecranon and the inner bony prominence of the humerus (epicondylus humeri).

Via the triceps it now moves upwards to the shoulder, where 1 cun above the armpit the acupuncture point SI 09 is. From here, it briefly goes up to Dü 10, then to Dü 11 in the middle of the shoulder blade.

Further, the meridian now runs vertically upwards to above the scapula bone.

Moving inward now to the spinous process of the 7th cervical vertebra (prominence), 2 cun from it.

Via the triceps and the head-turning muscle (sternocleidomastoid), the small intestine meridian runs upward to the jaw angle and the cheek.

Finally, it makes a detour back to where it ends just in front of the ear, in a depression that can be felt when the mouth is slightly open. Here lies the acupuncture point Dü 19.
